In 2007 my colleague the composer Miyuki Ito and I decided to form a collective for the purpose of giving concerts featuring US and Japanese composers, musicians, instruments. The collective was named JUMP: Japan-USA Musical Perspectives. Between the years of 2007 and 2019 we gave 8 concerts: in NYC, Boston, Tokyo, and Nagoya. Each concert showcased a small group of musicians for which every composer wrote music. We presented music for Western instruments–– piano, clarinet, saxophone, violin, cello, guitar, electronics, as well as for Japanese traditional instruments ––sho, koto, shamisen, and shakuhachi.
